O.C. Fair

A couple of weeks ago, I was able to make it down to this year’s O.C. Fair in Costa Mesa. I had a blast trying all the deep-fried food and enjoying the atmosphere of all the bright lights and south county sluzzles on a warm Saturday night.

When getting our drink on, I thought about all of the beer scams at concessions where the large cup is actually the same size as the small. (Here’s one example.) Well, guess what? Only after a kind sluzzle informed us that the large domestic beer was bigger than the large import beer for $1 cheaper, I realized we had been similarly duped, having just bought an import beer. However, the employee didn’t even think it was a big deal, admitting that the domestic cup was 24 oz. and the import 20 oz. I guess we have to start asking how many ounces the cups are now everywhere we go.

I tried the deep-fried oreos and butter, and while the latter is a huge attraction at the fair, it was kind of a letdown. It tasted good, but it wasn’t at all what we expected – a fried stick of butter. Rather, it looked and tasted like soft churros with whipped cream on it. Well, I can say I tried it now.

Every night during the month-long run, there’s a headline at the Pacific Amphitheater (for which you have to pay another fee to watch the show). The following night, we all giggled, was Selena Gomez, and they even had Weezer on August 4. A big fair, I guess. We debated whether Gomez was hot, although I would think it more fitting to call her cute.

Fans should’ve expected Justin Bieber to make a surprise appearance, which he did. Song selection? Not so hot. The high notes in the chorus were God-awful. He sounds like he’s hitting puberty now, his voice deeper than his pre-pubescent Baby. Oh, and someone tell him to pull his pants up. I can see his underwear.

  1. You’re not alone. My sister thought the same thing of Gomez.

  2. My sister went to this with her friends last month. Looked delicious. I love fried foods. I’m surprised they were able to get a semi-big name in Selena Gomez. But maybe I’m giving her cache too much credit.
